What does software maintenance and development include?
It covers ongoing care of a running system: fixing bugs, updating libraries and servers, monitoring, backups and handling reports. Development adds new features and improvements delivered in iterations. We can look after systems we built, but also those built by someone else, after an initial code review. We describe the scope of care before we start and tailor it to how critical the system is: an internal tool needs different care than a shop running around the clock.
How does taking over a system for maintenance work and how do I request changes?
We start with a review of the code, server and access, to assess the system’s condition and risks. Then we agree how tasks are reported and prioritized: urgent bugs come first, changes are planned in iterations. Taking over requires access to the repository, environment and data, so it is worth gathering them early. You know who is responsible for what and how communication runs.
What determines the cost of maintaining a system?
The size and complexity of the application, the quality of code and documentation, the number of integrations, the required availability and the scope, meaning whether it is just care or continuous development. A system in good condition is cheaper to look after than one needing frequent repairs. That is why after the review we may propose clean-ups that lower costs over time. We do not quote amounts without getting to know the system.
How do you protect the system from outages and security gaps?
We regularly update libraries and the environment, because outdated components are a common cause of gaps. We keep backups and check that data can be restored from them. Monitoring helps spot problems early, and we deploy changes in a controlled way, with the ability to return to the previous version. Our security approach is aligned with ISO/IEC 27001, but we do not promise that outages will never happen. After every serious incident we describe the cause and add a safeguard so the same problem does not recur.
Can you take over a system written by another company?
Yes, if we get access to the code and environment. We first do a review showing the state of the application, documentation and risks, and then say honestly what can be maintained and what is worth tidying up. If you lack the code or passwords, we help work out how to regain control of them. We work in technologies such as PHP, Laravel, Python, React, Angular, Vue and Node, and modernize the system if needed.
